I have Fedora 20 xfce spin installed, and I'd like to change to the Gnome spin (as my Fedora won't resume from suspend, possibly xfce related). I realise I may be facing a re-install, but how do I safely install a new fedora without losing my installed yum packages & user files?

You don't need to re-install Fedora. Gnome, as well as XFCE and KDE, are desktop environments, and they can be installed simultaneously.

To install Gnome, proceed in this way:

# yum groups install "GNOME Desktop"

Then logout and choose Gnome from the drop-down menu in the login screen. Good luck :)

In order to activate the Gnome login screen, called gdm, you first need to disable lightdm, which is the login screen that comes with the XFCE Spin:

# systemctl disable lightdm

and after that you have to enable gdm:

# systemctl enable gdm

Then reboot to see the changes.

Would this also replace the greeter and the user-switcher also? If not, how would I do that?

I don't know what is the login screen configured in the XFCE spin. But Gnome will also install its own login screen called gdm. I will update my answer to show how to activate it.
