I am currently using Mozilla Thunderbird 24.2.0 on Fedora 19 for my default email client. I use this email package on all of my pc's (Windows & Linux-based...).

Now, I have several pc's running at any given time, but I usually select only ONE machine to run Thunderbird all the time, allerting me to new email messages. I normally assign a sound to be played by Thunderbird whenever a new message is received. This works fine on all of my Windows-based systems.

However, when I try to set Thunderbird on my Fedora 19 system to do the same, it not only won't play the sound when an email arrives, it also fails to play ANY sound (default, or one I selected) when I try to TEST that sound!

My default sound driver is of course working perfectly - all multimedia apps play sound perfectly! So this is quite confusing!

Anyone have any ideas?

I looked around a bit and there seem to be a few users that have this issue. Can you please run this command and restart thunderbird, or log out and log back in, just to be sure?

sudo yum install libcanberra esound

This is where I found the information: https://bugzil.la/635918 There's another workaround in comment number 61 of the same bug that you could try too.

The SECOND workaround worked for me - I just copied the sound file (.wav) into my home folder, and now TB plays it just fine! Can't figure out why that works, though...?

Thanks, Francisco!

Please mark the answer as correct @ZTagre :)

If you're keen, you can file a bug at http://bugz.fedoraproject.org/thunderbird

Thanks.
