Desktop Freezes in Fedora 20

Every now and then applications like dolphin and file dialoges in other KDE applications freeze for >1 minute and today I had first a freeze where I could still use the mouse but nothing seemed to work. With Ctrl+Alt+F8 I deactivated compositing and then everything worked again. But then I got a second freeze where the music kept playing but no mouse or keyboard input was registered anymore. (I could not kill kwin per remote login because per default sshd is not running - I changed that now.)

Are there any known issues like that? Are there solution? This makes my shiny new PC pretty much useless. I'd really like to use Linux but if this keeps happening I have to switch to Windows. (And use a Linux VM in order to continue with web development.) :(

System:

16 GB RAM (no swap)
8 core Intel i7 3.5 GHz
GeForce GTX 760 (akmod-nvidia from rpm-fusion)
Linux panzi 3.12.8-300.fc20.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Jan 16 01:07:50 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
KDE: 4.11.5

Can you try another desktop environment to see if the problem happens there too? Also, you might try disabling nvidia GPU and see if problem happens using Intel GPU too.

You don't have swap? Maybe you should. I would look at the output of free when this is happening - or just add a swap file and see if it goes away. This behavior is exactly what I would expect on a when a system uses all available memory but doesn't have swap space. I know 16GB is a lot, but please, verify, don't speculate.

Things that you could troubleshoot:

  • Change the type of rendering (OpenGL vs xrender)
  • Turn off all effects
  • Try a lighter DM
  • Install the GPU drivers

I have similiar issues using a current fedora 20. My home is mounted using nfs4 with sec=sys.
