I logged in to the Gnome desktop and a message notifying me about something or other rose from the bottom of the screen briefly and then sank back under again. How can I summon it back to have a chance to read it?

Hi amturnip,

To trigger the message tray, you should move the mouse to :

  • GNOME Shell 3.4 and before : the bottom right corner of your screen..
  • GNOME Shell 3.6 : the bottom of the screen and wait about 1 second.
  • GNOME Shell 3.8 and later : the bottom of the screen and apply pressure on it.

You should then see the notifications message tray pop back up. There is also a keyboard shortcut: super+m.

Regards,

Andrew
