VDR was created by VirtualDub, a program primarily used for editing AVI movie clips in Windows. VDR files look and act just like regular video files in Windows, even though they are being hosted and converted in the background by VirtualDub. VDR may also be seen with a ".vdr.avi" double file extension and it is very limit in programs that can only recognize an AVI video file with an ending ".avi" extension. That means VDR file is not compatible with many Windows programs, which cause big difficulty to open VDR format in editing systems such as Sony Vegas, Adobe Premiere, Avid, etc. or players like VLC, Media Player Classic, etc. In order to open, play and edit VDR file, I use Aunsoft Video Converter to convert VDR file to DivX AVI, WMV, MKV, etc for easily open, edit and play on Windows. What beyond my expect, this excellent video converter can transcode almost all video formats, such as AVCHD MTS/M2TS, MXF, VOB, etc to more than 50 video formats. So it can easily handle all my videos conversion.

Here I would like to share my experionce on how to open and play VDR file via converting VDR to DivX AVI, WMV, MKV,etc.

Step1. Import VDR file to Video Converter

You can download free trail version of this VDR file converter.

VDR files are actually MPEG files, so you can rename the .VDR extension to .MPG first, and then you can import the renamed VDR files to the program via clicking "add video" or "add folder". I directly drag and drop VDR file into it, even faster.

Check the "Merge into one" box, you can merge VDR files into one file. Meanwhile you can split one big VDR file into several clips.

Step2. Choose output format.

Click "format" and you can choose the output format you want. The video formats under the specific devices are recommended formats for you to choose. For instance, if you edit VDR file in Sony Vegas, you can choose WMV, MOV; if you want to play VDR files in Avid, you can choose DNxHD MOV. Here takes DivX AVI as an example. I directly enter AVI in the search bar and locate DivX AVI fast.

Step3. Set video and audio profile

Before you convert VDR to DivX AVI, or WMV, MKV, MP4 etc, you can customize the profile for your output video by clicking "Settings" to set the video settings (video codes, resolution, frame rate, video bitrate) and audio settings (sample rate, sample rate, channels, audio bitrate).

"Reset" icon will return to default value for you. Profile list makes you easily view the profile of source VDR footage and output easier editing format, as well as your free disc space. You can click yellow triangle icons to view different tasks.

Besides, this VDR file converter is equipped with a built-in video editor, which allows you do initial editing via “editor tool” in the main interface. The supported video editing operations are: Trimming, cropping ... (more)
