i'm bridging a connection from my laptop with Ubuntu to my desktop with Fedora 19 64bit. I've just switched from Windows because it keeps crashing. Unfortunately when i plug the ethernet cable in it shows up fine on my laptop but my desktop says "network cable unplugged". Any help would be appreciated.

Connected two computers with an Ethernet cable requires a specialized Ethernet cable called a "crossover cable." Without getting too nitty-gritty, the crossover cable flips the transmit and receive wires so that your desktop and laptop can talk to each other.

If you don't have a crossover cable, find an Ethernet switch or hub and connect each computer to the it with regular Ethernet cables.
