I just finished installing Fedora 19 on an old laptop. The system boots up and presents the login screen, but when I attempt to login it hangs before it displays the desktop.

In /var/log/messages the last line when it hangs is:

systemd-logind[422]: Linked /tmp/.X11-unix/X0 to /run/user/1000/X11-display.

After around 5 minutes, the following lines are written to the file:

Nov 16 01:38:30 new-host-2 systemd-logind[422]: Removed session 2.
Nov 16 01:38:39 new-host-2 gdm[431]: **
Nov 16 01:38:39 new-host-2 gdm[431]: ERROR:gdm-slave.c:1094:_get_uid_and_gid_for_user: assertion failed: (username != NULL)

What should I look at to determine why the desktop never starts?

I found this in /var/log/Xorg.1.log:

[ 487.371] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for vesa
[ 487.371] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting

[ 487.372] Fatal server error:
[ 487.372] no screens found

This seems to imply that it doesn't find a video driver, but I still don't know how to fix it.

Update- Since I had no idea how to resolve the error, I tried re-installing Fedora19 with the KDE desktop instead of gnome. This works without any problems.

Another Update- Doing the update after the install did not resolve the problem so I continued to look for a resolution. I found another question that was similar to mine that had a reference to an existing bug:

This sounds a lot like you're hitting - you might want to follow that. AdamW (Aug 15 '13)

Looking at that bug, it looks like the same problem that I am encountering although the video is different.

You should have updated the system after installing, using a tty to login.

Bring the terminal using Ctrl+Alt+F1 or F2, login as root and then upgrade your system.

yum -y upgrade

Then reboot:

This should help.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did the upgrade, but I still encounter the same error.

It seems that the resolution for this problem is to not run Gnome with Fedora 19. If I install KDE with Fedora 19 that seems to work without significant problems. I also tried installing Fedora 20 beta with Gnome. That got past the original problem and allowed me to log in and get to the desktop, but if I tried to do anything it would crash. It seems that I encountered another bug. Unfortunately, KDE would also crash in Fedora 20. Cinammon in Fedora 20 seems to work with only minor issues.
