I am running Fedora 19 and and wondering, if I can disable the preview of some file types in the Files application.

The preferences of the Files application offer me these options for handling the thumbnail previews:

Show thumbnails;

  • Always
  • Local Files Only
  • Never

I found thumbnails for files like videos or photos very useful, but I am always confused, when I see thumbnails of my Calc or Writer documents. There are hard to distinguish using thumbnails. By the way, I think the same about PDF'S.

So, can I disable the thumbnail generation for Libre Office Documents and keep the thumbnails for photos and videos?

thx Stefan

I think the unoconv package is used to thumbnail *Office documents. Try uninstalling it.

For the original answer, please have a look at

Summarized, you can use dconf-editor to disable the use of thumbnails for specific file types (more concrete mime types)

  • run dconf-editor
  • Navigate to org > gnome > desktop > thumbnailer
  • You should see a empty property called disabled
  • Setting the property to application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet you can disable thumbnail creation of spreadsheets
  • At last, you have to delete the thumbnail cache ~/.cache/thumbnails and restart your computer.

I use the following value to disable the creation of thumbnails for PDF, Libre Office Documents and Microsoft Word files

['application/pdf', 'application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet', 'application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.text', 'application/msword']
