I installed fedora 19 on a new machine. I note that sometimes Gnome hangs and become impossible also to switch in another tty. with ssh i control what happens: launching htop i see the processor completely saturated by gnome-shell. I made a kill-all -9 gdm but when gnome start it continue to hang. Only rebooting the machine resolve the problem. How can i do to understand what is wrong?

  1. what graphics card are you using (use lspci if unsure)?
  2. If AMD or Nvidia, are you using open-source drivers?
  3. do you see any error messages in the output of journal -b when gnome locks?

just a side note: you can type Ctrl-Alt-F1 or Ctrl-Alt-F2 to open a virtual console, which is probably easier then going to a second machine and using ssh.

1: VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119 [GeForce GT 610] (rev a1); 2: Open Source drivers; 3: Bash command 'journal' not found. Perhaps i found 'journalctl' that query systemd-journal. Can be helpful?; I think that happens when i use virtual machine (virt-manager).

try DISPLAY=:0 gnome-shell --replace from another TTY or ssh session. When it hangs, see what it complains about.
