Is there a reason to re-compile the kernel anymore? And where can I find instructions to do so.

Back in the day, I ran RedHat, and the first thing I did was re-compile the kernel for my hardware. The machine ran faster, and was less "glitchy"

Sorry, but this website is for asking questions about technical problems (with detailled explanations) and is not a forum. If you have a specific problem please explain it.

thanks

And you should've posted that as a comment and flagged the question. This is not an answer. Besides, the question can be reformulated to fit the format quite easily, see my comment.

Try to reformulate your question to ask whether this is still beneficial, not whether people are still doing it. The body can stay the same.

oups, sorry, I'm quite new, I didn't see they were answers and comments posts. Thanks. '''update:''' actually I don't have a comment link on question. I guess I don't have enough karma.

Then it's OK to use the answer field I guess.

gives instructions. I can't answer the other part of the question, as I haven't custom built a kernel in years.

The reasons why one wants to build its custom kernel are listed in the link that @scrottro gave:

  • To apply patches for testing that they either generated or obtained from another source
  • To reconfigure the existing kernel
  • To learn more about the kernel and kernel development
