If you open gnome-control-center and click on audio, what do you see? Is your sound card listed? If you click on the hardware tab you can select to test your speakers. Does that work? Do you hear the test sound? In a terminal you can also start alsamixer and look what the hardware mixer settings are. Is some channel muted or very low? You can press the F6 key to change your soundcard (the first is a virtual soundcard (pulseaudio)). Look at all of them and tell us what you see—anything peculiar?

I had the same problem in Xfce. Did try changing stuff in alsamixer and so, but nothing. After installing xfce4-volumed the problem was solved. Maybe you also have some package missing.

Try the suggestions at: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_sound_problems

In particular this should help you isolate if it's pulseaudio or alsa or a kernel driver issue.
