My choice was based on the speed of Fedora over Ubuntu.

I'm not going to talk about Ubuntu because this drive us to a discussion without end, I'm going to talk about principles and pillars of fedora, without touching any aspect of Ubuntu:

I would like to clarify that Fedora is not only for developer user, that's a myth.

Let's Start Some Marketing Stuff,

Things to consider:

  • Fedora always offers the latest stable GNOME desktop environment, FEDORA was the first distro that distribute GNOME 3.2 in Fedora 16.
  • Presto is the best thing in Fedora, adds yum support for downloading deltarpms and using them to generate new packages. If user enables this plugin, it will make a substantial dent in the amount of data having to be downloaded for updates.
  • Based on RPM packages, using yum in Command Line Interface and also GUI environment.
  • Regular releases every six months.
  • systemd (systemd is a system and service manager for Linux) works the way it should.
  • Cutting-edge technology.
  • Large repository of packages.
  • Security with SELinux, is a mandatory access control (MAC) security mechanism implemented in the kernel.
  • They provide a feature list for the upcoming release as well as completion status example, FEDORA 19 Features.
  • FirewallD substitute of iptables was rewritten from zero and implemented successfully in FEDORA 18.

Things also to consider, that is not problem:

  • Drivers for important devices, such as wireless, Multimedia support and Video require third-party repositories, mostly because of Fedora’s continued adherence to FOSS ideals, and you can install rpmfusion repo without problem.
  • One year support. End of life and Fedora-EOL-Support.
  • SELinux, People said "it’s too complicated for a beginner", but as a beginner side you don't have to touch SELinux at all, all SELinux parameters and configuration are provides by FEDORA, What is SELinux?.
  • Any community documentation (blogs, wiki, etc.) can quickly get outdated between releases and it’s a mighty effort for the community to keep its documentation updated, but the documentation team is doing a great work with that, example Fedora Documentation.
  • Command Line interface at any moment of your linux life you probably will use the terminal but Linux is not like before actually all things can be do it via GUI.

Haven’t seen anything BAD in Fedora.

Where you can find help and documentation in Fedora:

  1. AskFedora.
  2. Fedora Forum.
  3. IRC.
  4. Community Websites.
  5. Planet Fedora.

I nice place to start, it's a wiki maintained by our site owner:

  • FAQ, where you can deep in all of aspect of FEDORA.

Fedora is rpm based linux distro while ubuntu is debian based .

if you are aware of the Redhat than you should choose the Fedora

Ubuntu provide more support to the software and have more user than Fedora

while Fedora is generally prefer as the best Linux Distro for the Developer .

Although I am personally in favor of Fedora, it is your decision to make. Evaluate both and then decide.

Run whichever you like. FYI you can run gnome-shell on Ubuntu

Other then that I suggest you try both distros and see which you prefer.

There’s a reason why Ubuntu boasts nearly 20M users – it is easier to use, has a better UI, and a larger software library. If you are looking for a replacement for Windows, pick Ubuntu. If you want a no-frills, pure GNOME experience and are comfortable with the slightly steep learning curve, choose Fedora instead.
