Hi, guys.

Lately, I'm coming across the term Fedora Silverblue. I searched online but I didn't understand it properly.

I was wondering if somebody could tell me โ€” What is Fedora Silverblue?

What's the difference between Fedora Workstation and Fedora Silverblue? If there's an advantage over Fedora Workstation, how to install it?

Have a great day.

Fedora Silverblue is a new variant of Fedora Workstation with rpm-ostree at its core to provide fully atomic upgrades. Furthermore, Fedora Silverblue is immutable and upgrades as a whole, providing easy rollbacks from updates if something goes wrong. Fedora Silverblue is great for developers using Fedora with good support for container-focused workflows.

Additionally, Fedora Silverblue delivers desktop applications as Flatpaks. This provides better isolation / sandboxing of applications, and streamlines updating applications โ€” Flatpaks can be safely updated without reboot.

Some other Information Fedora Silverblue Project -> here

Documentation -> here

How to get it ? -> download

How to install it ? same ways fedora Workstation or Dual-Boot

What is the Diferences ?

  • Install all desktop apps as Flatpaks. What is ? here and here
  • Support package layering for OS extensions in GNOME Software
  • Good support for "pet containers" in the desktop
  • Support rollbacks in GNOME Software
  • Support rebases in GNOME Software
  • Support kernel modules in rpm-ostree , What is ? here
  • Doesn't use DNF as packed manager

Actually there is not way to convert Fedora workstation in an rpm-ostree and viceversa...

and "Install all desktop apps as Flatpaks." is the reason to avoid it IMHO.

@rdtcustomercare, you can install application like workstation via command rpm-ostree install foo instead of dnf

this is not the place to discuss the inherent problems coming with flatpaks.
