Restoring desktop icons

My cat has just walked over my keyboard and somehow managed to delete almost all of my desktop icons. I have a backup, but not of my desktop itself. Where else are the appropriate files stored so that I can restore them? I can probably copy some of them across from my laptop if all else fails, but I'd like to avoid going to that extreme. Any suggestions will be appreciated. (If it helps, I'm using Xfce, not Gnome.)

I found them! I don't normally have an icon for the trash, as I don't use it, but I changed my settings to show it, and there they all were! Now, once I've got everything back where they belong, I'm doing a proper backup, and adding ~/Desktop to what's backed up.

@sideburns , I'm not a xfce expert but I found this for you -> type in terminal xfdesktop & and there is another option or xfdesktop --replace

or If it doesn't work: try Go to Settings -> Desktop and change the background of the desktop to something wallpaper. Then enter xfdesktop at the command line.

That might have worked if the links, launchers and .desktop files were still there, but as I learned the next morning, ~/Desktop was completely empty.
