I am currently running fedora 29.

When trying to watch a DVD (The Fellowship of the Ring) the selection menu opens. When you choose an option, such as 'play movie' VLC instantly closes, and leaves no log. I have installed all of the codecs I should need, though.

did you install codecs from rpmfusion.org nonfree, also try it using mplayer.

Some DVDs are copyright protected, and that might require you to install libdvdcss. This may or may not be legal in your country.
