How can I get xfce on F29 server started from level 3 to work?

In all cases in this note, I am running as root.

Starting with a blank (DBAN) disk I installed F29 server from DVD ISO. I then logged on (to level 3) and did:

dnf upgrade --refresh
dnf -y group install "Xfce Desktop"
echo "exec /usr/bin/xfce4-session" >> ~/.xinitrc
dnf upgrade --refresh
In /usr/bin/startx, set:
enable_xauth = 0

I get a damaged or incomplete xfce desktop.

   1. The panel appears to work correctly.
   2. There is no pattern on the deskgtop.
   3. The color of the desktop is grey.
   4. Clicking either button of the mouse on the desktop has no effect.
   5. With Settings->Desktop I can do what it takes to change the desktop
color. It appears to work in the little color example, but it has no
      effect on the desktop.

I installed k3b on the system. I worked correctly.

I have a file /root/.xsession-errors, about 3k, which I can post if asked.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks, but it didn't work. I tried with and without the last (and only) line in .xinitrc . Here is part of the response. The triple dots are where I deleted some of it. I can send the whole thing if you want.

/usr/bin/startxfce4: Starting X server

Unrecognized option: --
use: X [:<display>] [option]
-a # default pointer acceleration (factor)
-ac disable access control restrictions
-audit int set audit trail level
-displayID display-id manufacturer display ID for request
[+-]accessx [ timeout [ timeout_mask [ feedback [ options_mask] ] ] ]
                       enable/disable accessx key sequences
-ardelay set XKB autorepeat delay
-arinterval set XKB autorepeat interval

Device Dependent Usage
-modulepath paths specify the module search path
-logfile file specify a log file name
vtXX use the specified VT number
-keeptty don't detach controlling tty (for debugging only)
-masterfd <fd> use the specified fd as the DRM master fd (not if setuid/gid)

Interesting. Most of that output seems to be a listing of possible options for some program, but I don't know which. (/usr/bin/startxfce4 is a shell script.) At least we've eliminated the possibility that the way you were starting X was the issue.

I have the same problem. I installed F29 "Everything" with the XFCE desktop and selected packages. When I run "startxfce4" it fails at the following:

exec init /etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc -- vt1 -- vt1

..which fails with "Unrecognized option: --". The program in question seems to be xinit.

The reason you're getting that error is that there's not supposed to be a space between the -- and the option. It should be --vt1, and I don't know why it appears twice.

You do like doing things the hard way, don't you? Rebooting after the first command was OK, but probably redundant. Rebooting after installing Xfce was pointless, as was the final upgrade/reboot. And, finally, the correct way to start Xfce from a CLI is startxfce4. Try removing that last line from .xinitrc, use the proper command and see if it fixes things. HTH, HAND.
