I'm sorry that i haven't noticed exactly when, but after some update i had issues so that my window icons in taskbar literally disappeared . I just kept waiting hoping for some update to correct it but nothing.

Example, if i were to open terminal, firefox, thunderbird, virt-manager icons will not be displayed. But it will display on skype and viber (sometimes). I would post a screenshot but hey, i need at least 60 points :D

Basically, I had Fedora 28 with Gnome, which i ran over with Cinnamon. Worked perfectly fine. Upgraded to Fedora 29, worked great for quite some time and then started having issues.

Then i downloaded and completely reinstalled Fedora 29 but this time using Cinnamon spin, everything was fine until i performed dnf update and then it started happening again.

I'm on HP 250 G6 Notebook. Intel i5 CPU, Integrated Intel Graphics with Radeon which is killed by stupid switcheroo and i cen't get it to work. With 8gigs of RAM. Fedora is only OS installed.

Any idea guys?

As it started to happen both with F29 and 28, it's not release specific (which is understandable as most package versions in both releases are the same).

I'd look for bugs with cinnamon on Bugzilla and also google for them, as they can be not Fedora-specific.

No, no, you misunderstood. I had 28 and it worked perfectly fine while on 28. Even when i moved to cinnamon. And then i upgraded to 29. Worked perfectly fine for weeks up until some update, then started misbehaving.

At that point i completely reinstalled Fedora 29. Worked fine out of the box until i updated it to latest version via dnf update, and then started again with same symptoms.

I doubt that it's a Cinnamon bug since i also tried installing Linux Mint which also uses Cinnamon, i don't have that problem on Mint. But i love Fedore more so i would like to continue using it.

@maretodoric, I understood exactly that except that in you question you've said you reinstalled F28 (not 29), you could have mistyped.

Mint (and Ubuntu it's based on) don't update as rapidly as Fedora, problem can be caused by some library or driver (or maybe even kernel?) update that is not yet in Mint/Ubuntu.

But as we don't know what exactly causes the problem, looking for some reports against cinnamon is a way to start. Or just for reports about missing icons without specifying cinnamon or Fedora. This is a general advice, I have absolutely no specific information about your case.

One more generic and quite wild idea (but easy to try): try to boot into previous kernels still available on your system (Fedora keeps two previous ones by default). It'll be especially interesting if you still have 4.18 kernel (it was original on F29). If you can verify the problem isn't there with some previous kernel (the chance is slim but still), then kernel update is the culprit.

I've had some graphical glitches recently with 4.19 but not with 4.18, but my gpu hardware is different so as I said chance is slim :)

One more generic troubleshooting tip: when you notice such trouble it's useful to look which packages were updated since the time you're quite sure you haven't such a problem. You'll get a list of potential culprits. It's not always easy or even possible to be sure after which updates you've started getting problem, but still it's useful to keep in mind. And you can rollback one-two rounds of updates with dnf history undo or specific packages with dnf downgrade, it helped me a couple of times. And if you manage to pinpoint a specific package update, it's useful (to all) to file a bug.

Tried older kernel but still the same. However, i was out of town couple of days so i couldn't do much other troubleshooting but i just tried updating everything now since i see that bunch of new updates are available. Among them is cinnamon version 4.0.7-1, upgraded from 4.0.5-1 and it's working as expected.

So I am good ! :) Probably there was a cinnamon bug that came with some previous Fedora update.
