other apps unacceptable?

In the Software app, listing what's available for installing, I think there used to be many more apps with past Fedora versions than there are with F28. Question: Are you saying that apps not listed in Software are probably too risky to install on F28? I need an SFTP uploader but maybe I'll need other apps, too. (FileZilla supports SFTP but would require recompiling for Fedora.)

GNOME Software, in my opinion, is awful. There are some good GUIs out there, but I'd prefer using good old dnf, which is not only much more reliable, but is a direct way to search. It's much faster and if you aren't familiar with Linux/CLI, you should definitely give it a try.

It's not super difficult.

No, apps not listed in Software are likely not too risky. As long all your repos are fairly reputable, you should be 100% fine.

Use dnf to search apps, the Gnome app Store may not be showing all is available, you could install filezilla with sudo dnf search filezilla on the terminal to do search sudo dns search filezilla

Good Luck
