Bluetooth audio device not visible in KDE on second account

asked 2018-06-02 02:08:02 -0500

When I use Switch User to login to my computer account while leaving my wife logged in to her account, and power on our Bluetooth speaker, it connects to the laptop but it does not appear as an audio device when I right-click on the KDE volume widget, and nor does it appear in the settings dialog box. Thus, I can't use the device from my account in this situation. It works fine when I am the only user logged in to the laptop.

Assuming you have two users logged in, switch user to the other (primary) login and type pulseaudio -k in a terminal. This will kill Pulseaudio in the "primary login", which will disconnect and release the device, and allow the "secondary login" to claim the new audio device when you reconnect it (by clicking the Connect button next to the device in the Bluetooth widget). This isn't ideal, but it works.
