fedora26 freezes on re-boot

I am trying to apply the routine updates to Fedora26, which requires the tablet to be re-booted. However, every time it is re-booted it freezes with a blank screen except for having a static cursor in the top left hand corner. Neither mouse or keyboard are working. Before the freeze there is a message to the effect that it cannot find the UEFI database. If it is powered off, then on again it boots normally but the updates are not applied.
