Trouble in playing videos using VLC on fedora 27?

I recently upgraded from fedora 26 to 27. I think the upgrade might have messed up with my graphics card drivers/settings. I think it is a a Fedora problem rather than VLC's problem.

Here are my observations :

  • I can play audio files using vlc
  • VLC opens and stays perfectly fine(I can access tools>preferences..and other menu options), until I open a video file. VLC loads the file - it's name shows up in the title bar, but then it crashes with a segmentation fault.

As a note for you to help me out, I hadn't installed any graphics driver on my own even when I was using fedora 26. It just worked out of the box.

I have tried the following :

  • Reinstalling VLC - tried in many different ways as suggested by many websites
  • Disabling hardware acceleration in tools>preferences>video>hardware acceleration
  • Even though vlc is the swiss army knife of media players - I installed gstreamer1-plugin-mpg123 mpg123-libs - still crashes with the same error.

Following is the output of on the terminal as I open a video file after the GUI of vlc loads up

$ vlc

Same problem here. After multiple reinstalls of VLC I've had to switch to other players (ffplay, xine) which work fine. I had the same problem and I was able to solve it by changing the video output module to x-video-output(XCB). You can do so by going to tools>preferences>All>Video>Output modules and choosing what is suitable for you then save.
