Why can't I use grub in fedora 25 live

asked 2017-06-22 09:14:54 -0500

I booted system with fedora 25 with usb-drive, expecting to use grub to restore the MBR for the fedora I have previously installed, which is the version of 18. But the system seems don't recognize the command "grub" or "grub2" or "grub-install". What's worse, when I try to install grub2 with DNF(internet connected), it tells me that grubs have been found on the repository, but the installation skipped because of dependency issues. Can some people please explain to me these two misteries?

Strange, because the fedora 25 live does have grub2 available as "grub2-install". How else could it be used to install fedora on a hard disk?

You have to setup a chroot with the actual system disk mounted from within the Live system environment. Running grub-install on the Live environment is entirely pointless. From within this chroot of your actual system, you can run grub-install etc. You’ll find great tutorials for this if you spend two minutes searching on the web.
