Hi,

I am attempting to install Fedora 25 on an HP Laptop. Here's what I did so far:

  • Disabled secure boot in the BIOS. Made sure, that the USB stick is on top in the boot order.
  • Created a bootable USB stick using

dd if=Fedora-Workstation-Live-x8664-26Alpha-1.7 of=/dev/sdb

  • Booted from the USB stick. This works partially: The bootloader menu appears, and I can select Troubleshooting/Start Fedora Workstation Live 25 in basic graphics mode. (I tried the default start initially, but terminated that attempt, when nothing happened after quite some time.)

After a while, the following message appears:

squashfs: SQUASHFS error: unable to read xattr id index table
dracut-initqueue[519]: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/loop0,
dracut-initqueue[519]: missing codepage or helper program, or other error
dracut-initqueue[519]: In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dracut-initqueue[519]: dmesg | tail or so.
dracut-initqueue[519]: umount: /run/initramfs/squashfs: not mounted

(The number 519 varies a bit between boot attempts.)

Any suggestions, or ideas, how to carry on?

Thanks,

Jochen

Welcome both to ask.fedora and to Fedora itself. Judging by the name of the .iso you're using, you don't have Fedora 25, you have Fedora 26 Alpha, which is still in development, probably has various show-stopping bugs and is nowhere near being ready for Prime Time. (If it were close to ready, it would be Beta, not Alpha.) My recommendation is to download and use the .iso for Fedora 25. If you still want to use the Alpha, you should join the Fedora Test List and ask there, as this site is for released versions of Fedora, both current and past End of Life.

Something went wrong during creation of the image. Either the .iso that you downloaded got corrupted or the dd command did not finish. Download the iso again, validate the image. Then, use dd bs=8M if=... and after that use sync command to sync the cache.
