I used to copy fedora dvd in a pc with 4 dvd-rw units using fedora 14. I also use a PCI sata card. I changed to fedora 15 and put a new hdd and speed went down. I used wodim --scanbus to make sure that every device has its own bus. The motherboard has 4 sata ports but when I scanned, they were sharing the bus. Now I am trying everything with Fedora 16. I am using wodim in different terminals. If I write on two CD at the same time I got up to 3x, if I try 3 cd at the same time I got up to 1.5x ... when I first tried I was able to burn 4 disk at 11x or 12x. Top shows that processor and memory are not an issue. Not sure what changed from one version to next. I was about to try to install and obsolete version, but I thought that maybe was worth asking here.

You can use iotop to search for io operations

sudo yum install iotop
sudo iotop

And look any process which is eating all your io while burning. Maybe is your hard disk who cannot read/write fast enough for 4 dvd-rw, while creating online 4 iso image.

Also look the swap memory... and you could try to burn the same existing iso in the 4 writers.

I dropped this. I got tired of testing different things. I dissembled the four dvd drives from my computer and bought a dvd duplicating tower. It was a shame because it was king of geeky. But hunting the cause of this was time consuming and expensive at it requires dvd to test it. I am a business administrator, my skills are limited. Hope somebody get back to kernel issues with multiple dvd drives. Not a very usual setup, most likely not well tested.
