Thunderbird 17.0 (fedora 17) cannot auto detect the character encoding. At first, I can do this if I go to View > Character Encoding > Auto-Detect > Universal. But there is a problem here. I got this message error:

ReferenceError: BrowserSetForcedCharacterSet is not defined

Actually, I have this problem only in subject field, not in the body of message.

Any clues to fix this problem?

You have > 1000 views and noone is answering, because the answere is oviosly: upgrade .

Fedora 17 is out of line for more than 2,5 years now and so is Thunderbird for F17.

Use this if you are afraid of upgrading: ( boot in runlevel 3 and login as root )

rm -f /lib/libpng12.so.0;ln -s /lib/libpng12.so.0.49.0 /lib/libpng12.so.0

rpm --import https://fedoraproject.org/static/DE7F... ;

yum -y update yum;yum clean all;yum -y --releasever=18 --disableplugin=presto distro-sync;

rpm --rebuilddb

worked on > 20 machines
