No windows in fresh installation of Fedora 25

I did a fresh install of fedora 25 on my HP workstation, which has an NVIDIA Quadro M2000 graphics card. The default live image gave a blank screen, which seems to be a known bug , so I installed using the troubleshoot boot option.

Installation went fine and the new installation worked fine (apart from graphics). I then proceeded to install the nvidia drivers and I used those from negativo17, which seemed to install OK. However, when I rebooted the machine I didn't get a log-in prompt, but I do get the fedora grey background. If I enter my password, I get the default fedora 25 background but no windows.

I am at a loss at what is going on. It could be something to do with gnome but I don't know where to look to find out. Has anyone else seen this or has any suggestions of how to troubleshoot?

Use Ctrl-alt f2 to get to tty terminal, login as root and run dmesg to see if the drivers are loading properly. also run lsmod and make sure nouveau is not enabled, it messes with the nvidia drivers.
