How do I switch on the display of log messages during startup (and shut down)

I see some error messages very short, but no time to read them There should be a way to always see the log messages (not only when there are errors), but I have forgotten how Is there a way to pause the output/startup so I can study them Is there a way to view them when system is started (also prov shutdown log)

press ESC for that. Anyway boot messages are logged, read them with dmesg and journalctl
