how do I enable java in firefox?
I ran su -c "yum install java-1.8.0-openjdk" and told already installed. But firefox doesn't seem to recognize I have java installed.

In addition to @fcomida answer, you must restart your web browser after you install icedtea-web

You don't.
Mozilla/Firefox is depreciating NPAPI plugins only excluding flash (for some time).
In general you should have no reason to use them anymore (also flash), they only pose an additional security risk and it is thus discouraged to use them. (also on other OSes)
it's unfortunatly still the only way to access IMPI modules..
