Hi,

I'm trying to extend my desktop on a second physical screen using xrandr. Currently, both screens are cloned.

But whatever I try, I get the following error :

# xrandr --auto --output VBOX0 --mode 1920x1080 --right-of VBOX1
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 149 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 7 (RRSetScreenSize)
Serial number of failed request: 28
Current serial number in output stream: 29

Here is the result of xrandr -q :

Screen 0: minimum 64 x 64, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 32000 x 32000

   640x480 60.0

And finally, here is how I've set up the xorg.conf file :

# VirtualBox generated configuration file
# based on /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "Monitor[0]"
  ModelName "VirtualBox Virtual Output"
  VendorName "Oracle Corporation"
EndSection

Section "Device"
  BoardName "VirtualBox Graphics"
  Driver "vboxvideo"
  Identifier "Device[0]"
  VendorName "Oracle Corporation"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
  SubSection "Display"
    Depth 24
    Modes "1920x1080" "1920x1080"
    Virtual 3840 2160
  EndSubSection
  Device "Device[0]"
  Identifier "Screen[0]"
  Monitor "Monitor[0]"
EndSection

If you had any idea of the problem, it would be very helpful... Thank you !

I don't know about using xrandr but I've been able to extend virtualbox to another monitor by the following steps:

  1. hightlight the VM you want to update the settings for
  2. clicking 'settings -> Display'
  3. change "Monitor Count" from 1 to 2
