I'm on Fedora 16 (64-bit), using Xfce4.

What process must have broken if the window controls (close, open, maximize, minimize, resize) all vanished? It's like this for every window now. Context menus and alt+tab to switch between windows are also broken. This just happened randomly at some point, shortly after I was installing an mp3 plugin, and the usual restart / reboot, sort of deal didn't fix it...

The xfce window manager is xfwm4

What happens if you run that from a terminal ?

You can try re-installing it

yum reinstall xfwm4

What were you doing exactly when it broke ? Installing mp3 plugin from where ? how ?

Had the same question. Though I'm on Ubuntu 12.04. 'xfwm4' worked for me too.
