ping problem through tethering and ethernet

asked 2017-01-27 06:44:02 -0500

I use the 3G mobile Internet access of my Lenovo A1000 Android phone through Wifi.

My laptop runs a fresh CentOS, which is basically a Fedora some versions ago.

I have switched on the Wifi Hotspot on my phone, and then did

nmcli device wifi connect "Lenovo A1000" password 'xxxxxxx'

to which I got the response that

Device 'wlo1' succesfully activated with 'long-hexadecimal-hyphenated-string'

I can access the web through this setup, but ping gives me

ping: Name or service not known

Does this mean that ping does not access the name server for some reason?

Does pinging some external IP address directly work? ping

If it works you may have an issue with DNS resolver. In that case can you post contents of your /etc/resolv.conf ?
