Hi. I want to install IntelliJ Idea on Fedora 25. I found this tutorial for installing. I want to know is it necessary to copy the Idea directory to the /opt and create symbolic links? Thank you if you guide me.

The best way that I have found to install the Jetbrains IDE's is to download. Then expand the directory in the download location and rename it to intellij as an example. Now as root move the directory to /opt.

As your user execute the following command /opt/intellij/bin/ and the install will do the rest including setting up menus etc.

Hope this helps and it works with all Jetbrains IDE's (pycharm, phpstorm etc)

While it's not necessary, that is the right way to do it. The symbolic links allow the program to be run from any directory by placing the link in a location your PATH environment variable specifies. If you skip this step you would have to specify the entire file path to the binary every time.

Placing the program itself in /opt is traditional but you can put it wherever you want.

Download and install JetBrains Toolbox, it will then handle all the details about installing the IDE. It makes it all nice and easy.
