EDIT: If you don't want/need it, you can disable the button with following command: gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.orientation active false.

Sometimes even old laptops have an accelerometer, presumably to detect and prevent hard drive shocks. You can list them using cat /proc/bus/input/devices.
