Edit: the failed boots should still have updated the logs on the hard drive. Check the logs with these steps:

Boot from the installation CD in "LiveCD" or "trial" mode.

You'll need the device name of the hard drive partition. A gui tool that shows partition information is gparted, or some command line tools are blkid and fdisk -l. Let's say it's /dev/sda1.

In a console, create a folder for mounting:

mkdir /mnt/boot

Then mount the boot partition:

sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/boot

Change to the log folder:

cd /mnt/boot/var/log

Display the logs in date order:

ls -ltr

Now check any recently-modified log, such as messages:

less messages
