Hello, I am new in this group, and have a big problem. I Have been able to upgrade my fedora before, but now the upgrade from 27 to 28 failed. I did the following commands: sudo dnf upgrade --refresh sudo dnf install dnf-plugin-system-upgrade sudo dnf system-upgrade download --releasever=28 sudo dnf system-upgrade reboot

This last one was taking a long time and I could see the thousands of steps going, but I had to leave the room for a while, then when I came back 30 minutes or so later, my screen was black. The computer was not showing any activities, the keyboard was also dead. At this point, I could only power it off. Now when it boots, it just frozen after the post. I managed to press F2 to go to the BIOS, then when I exit, I got the boot manager, but any option I choose, it does not boot, just freezes. Is there any hopes to recover? I know I can press "e" to edit the line or "c" for command prompt, but not sure what to do.

I have typed the screen I have:

Fedora (5.0.5-100.fc28.x86_64) 28 (Workstation edition)

Fedora (4.18.19-100.fc27.x86_64) 27 (Workstation edition)

Fedora (4.18.19-100.fc27.x86_64) 27 (Workstation edition)

Fedora (0-rescue-143.... big number here) 25 (Workstation edition)

Use arrow keys to change your selection

Press "e" to edit the selected item, or "c" for a command prompt

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Mau

Hello aeperezt,

thank you very much for your prompt and correct response! I start this with the youtube link here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIiXn...

But it was missing the following steps listed on your link: # touch /.autorelabel # /sbin/reboot -f

I just went back on the rw init=/bin/bash boot mode and issue the two commands above. The server took a long time to finish the selinux update and at the end it reboot and I was able to login again with my user and also the root with my new password!

Many thanks, specially for your FAST response!

Mau

2017-06-28 20:32:29 -0600 asked a question Fedora 25 - Lost root password

Hello all,

I cannot remember the root password on my Fedora 25, and my user is not member of the administrators, though I thought it was, but now I cannot sudo su, etc.. When I tried to login as root, it says password incorrect.

Well, I follow the instructions for this youtube, where is says to apply the command rw init-/bin/bash at the end of the linux line. Maybe my mistake was to use the first line on the menu, not sure if this was bad.

I was able to change the root password. When I type exit, the system crashed with a panic. I power it off, and once the GUI appeared, I was unable to login with my normal user (not sure what affect it) and also not able to login as root! A repeat the process and even added a new user with its password, and now it is even worse! System will not boot, it stops toward the end with messages that cannot start firewalld, I am at lost!

Is it salvageable? I cannot find ANYTHING related to root password recovery for Fedora 25. I assume now itis completely different from previous versions. Can anyone give me some directions? I really appreciate!
