I'm running Fedora 29. When I click on an app in the gnome shell (e.g., "Clocks"), nothing seems to happen. However, running the application from a terminal window (e.g., gnome-clocks) works with no errors. How can I debug the problem? I haven't been able to find a log file with any relevant error message. This happens with some applications but not others (e.g., GHex can be started from gnome-shell).

I have since tried downgrading kernels to 4.8.6-300 (the base for the release) with no luck, however when installing the kernel packages, I did get an error message: /lib/kdump/kdump-lib.sh: No such file or directory when dracut was running, so perhaps it's trying to put the firmware in an initial ramdisk and failing? But in that case, wouldn't removing and reinserting the module once the system has booted fix things (it does not)?

Also, after booting into kernel 4.8.6, dmesg not only complains that it can't load firmware, but also 'unsupported splx structure`.

My system is an MSI C236A with an MSI Motherboard "Gift" Wi Fi Bluetooth PCI E Adapter Intel 8265NGW. My problem appears to be the iwlwifi card being unable to load firmware... dmesg shows

where the message repeats for several different integers xx. Curiously, modinfo on iwlwifi indicates that it expects version 28 of the firmware but I've been unable to find it anywhere (it's not part of the firmware RPM and the kernel.org source trees jump from 27 to 31 with nothing in between). I tried adding the 31 version to /usr/lib/firmware and setting the selinux context to match but it refuses to load it. I have not had a chance to try downgrading the kernel packages yet.

Hmm... I just saw that you can send messages from Telegram, so I am guessing my problem is separate from yours. Maybe your DNS is a problem. If you try to visit http://74.125.138.103/ do you get Google? If so, then DNS (the service that turns internet names into numeric addresses) is the problem.
