2017-08-06 22:01:19 -0600 commented answer What are the important parameters for cupsd on Fedora 25

I have two workstation clients at the moment, both Linux. One is Mandriva 2010.2 and the other is Centos 6.5 (32 bit). The standby server running RHEL 6 also uses this printer for reporting and a check just now shows that it doesn't work either, but I haven't spent any time tryrng to fix that yet. No Windoze machines in the mix.

2017-08-02 20:07:22 -0600 commented answer What are the important parameters for cupsd on Fedora 25

Yes, that was one of the first things I checked. ss -tl | grep ipp gives:

LISTEN 0 5 192.168.1.7:ipp :

Also, the firewall is open on this socket because an attempt to connect to the server using a browser gives the HTML CUPS instruction and setup page on the server.

My guess is that I missed something on the setup but I don't know what.

2017-08-01 20:13:51 -0600 asked a question What are the important parameters for cupsd on Fedora 25

I have cupsd running on a Fedora 25 server. If I print a .ps file from the server it works fine. Any other print file type prints a page of @PJL... commands ahead of the printed pages. This is NOT a native PostScript printer.

I have been completely unable to make it work as a network print server and any workstation trying to print to it gets a "Printer Offline" response. The result of the "lpoptions" command is:

copies=1 device-uri=usb://HP/LaserJet%204L finishings=3 job-cancel-after=10800 job-hold-until=no-hold job-priority=50 job-sheets=none,none marker-change-time=0 number-up=1 printer-commands=AutoConfigure,Clean,PrintSelfTestPage printer-info=HP-LaserJet-4L printer-is-accepting-jobs=true printer-is-shared=true printer-location printer-make-and-model='HP LaserJet 4L Foomatic/ljet4 (recommended)' printer-state=3 printer-state-change-time=1501635520 printer-state-reasons=none printer-type=8564740 printer-uri-supported=ipp://localhost/printers/HP-LaserJet-4L

Copying all print files to the server using scp is NOT an option!

Any ideas what I have forgotten?

Thanks in advance.

John

2017-07-07 19:29:53 -0600 commented answer How do I activate cupsd?

First, thank you to both the respondents. Much appreciated and I now have cups "sort of working" on the server.

cupsd shows up when I do a ps list and port 631/tcp/udp is open when I look using ss -n -l. firewalld shows port 631 as open.

BUT I can't seem to find the attached network printer from a work-station. In the past, the old server attached printer just sort of "appeared" in the printer options on the workstations. I have checked, so far as I know how, the config files cupsd.conf and cups-files.conf and there IS a ppd file for the printer.

So, any suggestions as to what I do next?

2017-07-06 18:41:58 -0600 asked a question How do I activate cupsd?

Fedora 25, new installation, there is no systemd service/unit file nor an init.d file to start cupsd. I tried to construct a systemd service file but it just hangs and eventually dies after a few minutes so I obviously need something I don't know.

just typing "cupsd" at the command prompt does start cupsd but it doesn't seem to do anything and it has to come up automatically on system boot, without operator intervention.

I want cupsd to serve IPP protocol (socket 631) network printing.

Thanks in advance.

2017-06-22 11:54:39 -0600 answered a question Fedora 25, was working, now fails to boot

OK, I got this working finally. Here are the nausiatingly complele details, just in case you get into the same bind.

First, I replaced the defective sde disk and after installing the new one, I booted from the install/rescue function on the installation USB key.

Now use fdisk to put a partition table on the new disk (fdisk /dev/sde; then g to create a new partition table; then n to add a new partition; then t set the partition type to RAID. (type 29 on my system, but check using l to be sure).

Now STOP the existing array using "mdadm --stop /dev/md127". That allowed the other mdadm functions to work properly. I had to stop twice as sdb was showing as busy the first time.

Then I did an "mdadm --assemble --force /dev/md127 --/dev/sd[bcdef]1" and that forced the degraded array to start and it is now rebuilding /dev/sde1. Odds are, that if you didn't have a spare disk, there won't be enough disks for RAID6 so you will need to use --force, but try it without first.

There is a LOT of information on RAID problems and configuration available at:

https://raid.wiki.kernel.org/index.ph...

2017-06-22 10:23:29 -0600 commented answer Fedora 25, was working, now fails to boot

I have installed an new disk, replacing sde. Using fdisk I added the partition table and marked it type 29 - Linux RAID. using mdadm from the install rescue system, I ran mdadm --detail /dev/md127 and got the 4 working disks listed as expected. Now whenever I try to assemble the array mdadm reports that it cannot get the array info for that array. Same result when I try to fail and re-add sde.

I note that --detail reports the array as RAID0, not RAID6 as it should be.

Where do I go from here?
