2019-03-24 23:23:53 -0600 marked best answer sluggish login on fedora 28

I have a question about reducing the time required after initiating a login from the gnome login prompt until the desktop is useable. I recently installed a solid-state drive that now contains my boot and most system partitions while keeping the frequently changing system data & personal files on a standard hard disk. Boot up time is significantly improved (about 20 seconds), but the initial login to the gnome desktop after a cold boot seems quite sluggish in comparison. There is a great deal of disk activity and the desktop remains mostly unresponsive until this is finished. I want to know what I can do to improve this. This problem is only for initial login after boot. Subsequent login times are much quicker.

Current configuration is: AMD 8 core FX processor with 10 gigabytes memory

Fedora 28 64-bit system using kernel: vmlinuz-4.19.13-200.fc28.x86_64

Conventional hard disk partitioned using lvm /dev/sda2 contains

Solid state disk contains :
    /dev/sdb1 ----- boot EFI System Partition

lvm partition on sdb

Since the problem seems to be one of disk I/O I took a screen snapshot of the system monitor with top disk I/O processes highlighted.

From an old post to this board labeled: Very slow login It mentioned a problem with the packagekit.service and recommended some procedures. So I did the systemctl list-units and found some problems:

systemctl list-units shows the following failures:

  • mcelog.service loaded failed failed MachineCheck Exception L>....
  • packagekit.service loaded failed failed PackageKit...

I tried the recommended **dnf reinstall PackageKit-command-not-found** and it reinstalled but the service still shows a failure. The above screenshot is shown during a gnome.Xorg session, but the delay and errors are still present under wayland. Am I looking in the right direction to solve this or am I being distracted by unrelated problems?

2019-03-24 21:39:16 -0600 marked best answer fedora 29 install hesitation

I've been using Fedora at work & now at home since Fedora 11 and been mostly keeping abreast of current releases. At least keeping within the window of currently supported releases, but I am having apprehensions about installing fedora 29. I upgraded to F28 in October last year and attempted an upgrade to F29 directly after but after download it failed due to some conflict or other. (As an aside is there any way to query the dnf history file to get details on failed updates?) At the time I just put the upgrade on hold assuming that the issues would be worked out. Since that time, I've been monitoring these pages, and it seems that there are a significant amount of problems reported around the F29 release. More so than I remember with other releases.I am nervous. Am I being overly cautious here? The life cycle on Fedora 28 will come to an end with the release of F30 I think in April. How confident can I be of an upgrade without problems. Is there a statistic on how robust each release has been? If so where can I find it?

2019-01-05 23:20:47 -0600 marked best answer Draftsight will not run under wayland (fedora 25). Will this be fixed?

Hi, I've been a fedora user since release 15 and I primarily chose it as it was one of a few linux distributions under which I could run the Draftsight, cad system from 3D systems. I've followed updates and upgrades quite faithfully over the years and am currently running fedora 25, which unfortunately has problems running Draftsight under wayland. When I execute the following short shell script now

DISPLAY=$DISPLAY vblank_mode=1 /opt/dassault-systemes/DraftSight/Linux/DraftSight

I get the following critical error:

ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.
[noel@localhost ~]$ DISPLAY=$DISPLAY vblank_mode=1 /opt/dassault-systemes/DraftSight/Linux/DraftSight
ATTENTION: default value of option vblank_mode overridden by environment.

(DraftSight:2861): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: cannot register existing type 'GdkDisplayManager'

(DraftSight:2861): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion 'result != 0' failed

(DraftSight:2861): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_new: assertion 'G_TYPE_IS_OBJECT (object_type)' failed

This problem can be circumvented by initiating a gnome-xorg session and executing the script from root using sudo. However, after the last few recent updates, currently using (vmlinuz-4.10.8-200.fc25.x86_64), my gnome session, after a short idle time, will lockup with a darkened screen. I can use ctl-alt-f2 or ctl-alt-f3 to login and restart the x-session or login to another user under wayland, but if I relogin with the same user, I return to the frozen desktop. I am concerned that the support for xorg sessions and the problem with glib under wayland will escalate with further release updates and I will loose the ability to run a critical app. I would like to get these issues resolved. regards. Noel Giffin

2019-01-05 23:18:36 -0600 marked best answer system-config-user wayland

I believe there is a problem using system-config-users on fedora 28 with the gnome desktop under wayland. I call up the users&groups app which I believe directs to system-config-users and it fails to open properly. I get the authentication window and enter a correct password but then no GUI opens up. If I am using the old gnome-Xorg desktop it opens correctly.
