2016-12-03 15:58:02 -0600 commented answer USB drive erased by Fedora media writer without asking. How to recover data?

Data is not actually deleted on FAT and NTFS drives, merely marked as deletable. Therefore, if the OP recovers their data quickly and does not overwrite their original data, it is all recoverable. Although Fedora is funded by Red Hat, they aren't responsible for everything, and Fedora has their own support page. I expect that the media writer did warn about formatting the drive. If it didn't, it needs to be corrected.

2016-12-03 15:51:36 -0600 answered a question USB drive erased by Fedora media writer without asking. How to recover data?

If you can access a Windows machine (either through dual-booting, a friend or a second PC) download and run a tool called Recuva by Piriform. It will scan your drive for deleted files, and allow you to easily recover them. If you don't have access to a Windows machine, you can use Test Disk (as you said) or you can use PhotoRec (it recovers more than photos).

I will caution you to not write any data to the USB until you have taken care of the problem, but this may not be necessary. You said that you haven't written anything else to it.

Deleting data and formatting drives is a common practice when setting up bootable drives. The media writer was meant to warn you about this, but if it did, I expect the Fedora devs to sympathise with you, but tell you the same that I did. This isn't something that will change.

2016-12-03 15:42:23 -0600 answered a question Steam freezing with Fedora 25(probably GPU issues)

Fedora 25 uses the Wayland window manager by default. Mesa supports it, but perhaps Steam does not. You can wait until Steam updates, but they might not for a while. Provided that you are using GDM, navigate to /etc/gdm/custom.conf and edit it to say

[daemon]
WaylandEnable=false

You could also try updating everything, but this should be done by default. I'm not sure if this answers your question.

2016-11-25 01:34:08 -0600 commented answer Unable to dual boot windows 8.1 and Fedora 24

I did not know that update-grub was an Ubuntu command. Is there an equivalent for Fedora and other distros? Also, to be fair, I only forgot the "2" in grub2.

2016-11-24 23:51:49 -0600 answered a question Unable to dual boot windows 8.1 and Fedora 24

You want GRUB (the Linux bootloader) to be loaded by your BIOS. It can then load Windows, Fedora or any other OS for you. The reason for this is that it supports many operating systems better than Microsoft's bootloader.

You need to add Windows to GRUB. There are a number of ways to do this. A simple solution is running the command "update-grub" which will force GRUB to search your hard drive(s) for operating systems, and add them to its list. You can try the Boot Repair tool, but it is unfortunately not available as an application on Fedora (Fedora doesn't support user-managed [ppa] repos). It is fortunately available as a live CD as well, available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/boot.... It should fix everything without issue, but if it fails you can get detailed instructions and photos at http://www.howtogeek.com/114884/how-t.... If you would like to do this by editing grub.cfg, detailed instructions can be found here, but it may be too difficult for you.

I'd recommend backing up grub.cfg (found at /boot/grub/grub.cfg, if I'm not mistaken) and having a live CD on hand to fix up any possible issues. If one does occur, boot up the live CD and replace grub.cfg with your backup.

2016-11-24 08:31:34 -0600 answered a question Hello Fedora

Install whichever programs (or their Linux equivalents) you have used in the past. I'd recommend LibreOffice (unless Fedora comes with it preinstalled, but I thought that Fedora used OpenOffice), Firefox, Google Chrome and VLC. But this is about which programs you would use. If you use the command line a lot then you might like htop (similar to Task Manager for Windows and neater than top [in my opinion]) and nethogs (similar to Glasswire, and allows you to monitor inbound and outbound traffic).

2016-11-24 08:31:32 -0600 asked a question Acer V Nitro

I own an Acer V Nitro VN7-572G, and I was planning on setting up a Windows 10/Fedora 25 dual boot system in the near future. I was wondering if Fedora contained the necessary drivers for my laptop, and if there were any particular problems specific to my laptop that I should be aware of. I have had prior experience with Linux before (Debian and Ubuntu on desktop), and do not mind using the terminal for whatever may be needed to configure my system. Thanks.
