software installer never finishes

I cannot seem to install any software.

I have tried software that I have found using the search feature within the software installer, and software that I have tried to install after downloading the RPM, using the software installer.

One example is Chrome. I download the RPM from google.com/chrome, and FireFox asks if I want to open it with Software Installer. When I do, it sits at 75% complete doing nothing.

If I do a "sudo dnf clean all" and then go back into the software installer, I can see in "installed" that Chrome is still trying to install, and if I try again to re-download from google.com/chrome, it then forever says "Sorry, this did not work. Operation was cancelled"

I cannot find any reference to the software installer attempt to install the rpm in either of the 3 dnf log files.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Problem:

The "GNOME Software" application installer will not install any software after a few successes.

I installed a few applications successfully, however now nothing will install.

I click "Activities" Gnome menu, then "Software", then I can search for software and click "Install".

The "GNOME Software" window will show a progress bar for the install progress, and sometimes the progress bar stops at 5%, and definitely installs nothing, while other times it gets to 75% and stops. About 1/2 of the time that "GNOME Software" stops at 75%, the application will not be installed, and the other 1/2 of the time it did indeed install, but there are no logs of such activities in the DNF logs.

I tried to install Google Chrome, for example, from the website. Downloaded the RPM with FireFox, double clicked it to install, GNOME Software opens, shows the Google Chrome install page with a progress bar, stops at 75%. No evidence anything is happening in DNF logs, no running rpm processes, dnf processes, and no rpm db lock.

After poking around, I found that the install DID, in-fact, complete.

However now I wanted to install the "GNOME Tweak Tool", and the same problem happens again. Search for it in Software, try to install it, the progress bar freezes at 5%. No DNF processes, no RPM processes, no logs anywhere, nothing.

I tried googling the problem, but "GNOME Software" doesn't ever bring anything up except about dnf, yum, or rpm. nothing about the GNOME software installer never finishes

I cannot seem to install any software.

I have tried software that I have found using the search feature within the software installer, and software that I have tried to install GUI tool.

I did get the "Gnome Tweak Tool" installed by DNF command line with no trouble, but after downloading the RPM, using the software installer.

I cannot find any reference to the the Gnome software installer attempt to install the rpm was frozen.

My concern is that, others with less technical experience than me will have even more trouble, and that I may have borked a few things up unknowingly, that may come back to bite me in either the longer run.

Request: Help troubleshooting and ultimately to find a solution that makes the "GNOME Software" GUI installer work correctly once again, and then a point in the direction of the 3 dnf log files.

Thank you in advance for any help.where I can write and update some documentation so that others can benefit from working through this.

Problem:

The "GNOME Software" "gnome-software" gui application installer (a wrapper for dnf?) will not install any software after a few successes.

I In the default gui that comes with fedora 25 (still not entirely sure if this is gnome, wayland, or some combination?) there is the "activities" menu, and in the side panel in the activities menu, there is a "software" icon that launches gnome-software: GNOME Software Icon

When I first installed Fedora 25, this gnome-software gui application (wrapper for dnf?) worked great! I installed a few applications successfully, however now nothing will install.

I click "Activities" Gnome menu, applications, everything was great.

Now, gnome-software will say it is installing, and then "Software", hang at either 5%, 75%, or 95% in the progress tracker. gnome-software then I can will act very slow, and trying to search for other software and click "Install".will be very sluggish.

The "GNOME Software" window will problem seems to be that gnome-software does not have a correct view of the rpmdb, given that dnf seems to show a that any software install started by gnome-software completes correctly.

So the full problem: the gnome-software gui app no longer shows installed software or updates what it shows to the end user what has been installed on the system, and when attempting to install will hang the progress bar at either 5%, 75%, or 95%.

Expected / Desired results:

I would like to change settings or update the version of gnome-software, or be directed to fixing a bug in gnome-software so that:

  • gnome-software always shows correct progress for the install progress, and sometimes software installs
  • gnome-software always has correct read access to the rpmdb (through a wrapper, db corruption is bad)
  • gnome-software will either prompt for sudo access or install as the current user when instructed to install an application
  • gnome-software will in some way handle if an application was installed by dnf separately, and properly show the application installation status from the rpmdb (and/or dnf db if there is one, I'm new to dnf, but an old time expert with rpmdb and yum)

What I have done:

  • I have tested for running dnf processes while gnome-software is trying to install applications and "hangs" at an arbitrary percentage, and it seems the dnf processes will have ended by the time I get to the terminal.
  • I have tested trying to install an application with gnome-software that I have searched for, seeing it hang at the arbitrary percentage, and then restarting the computer, and the application is still listed in gnome-software as installing and stopped at the arbitrary percentage
  • I have tested trying to install an rpm by double clicking the rpm from nautilus (gnome file manager). This opens gnome-software, shows the rpm as installing, then the progress bar stops hangs at 5%, and definitely installs nothing, while other times it gets to 75% and stops. About 1/2 of the time that "GNOME Software" stops at 75%, the application will not be installed, and the other 1/2 of the time it did indeed install, but there are no logs of such activities in the DNF logs.

I tried to install Google Chrome, an arbitrary percentage again. When this happens I also then check for example, from the website. Downloaded the RPM with FireFox, double clicked it to install, GNOME Software opens, shows the Google Chrome install page with a progress bar, stops at 75%. No evidence anything is happening in DNF logs, no running rpm processes, dnf processes, and no find none hung, and try restarting, and then verify that the rpm db lock.

After poking around, I found that the install DID, in-fact, complete.

However now I wanted to install the "GNOME Tweak Tool", and the same problem happens again. Search for it has indeed installed, but the gnome-software still shows the application as installing at the arbitrary percentage

  • searched online, a bunch

Please ask as many questions as you like! I am happy to answer them in Software, try to install it, the progress bar freezes at 5%. No DNF processes, no RPM processes, no logs anywhere, nothing.

I tried googling the problem, order to get this issue figured out!

PS: I am leaning towards this potentially being a "gnome-software" bug, but "GNOME Software" doesn't ever bring anything up except about dnf, yum, or rpm. nothing about the GNOME software installer GUI tool.

I did get the "Gnome Tweak Tool" installed by DNF command line with no trouble, but after the Gnome software installer was frozen.

My concern is that, others with less technical experience than me will have even I need more trouble, and that I may have borked a few things up unknowingly, that may come back to bite me in the longer run.

Request: Help troubleshooting and ultimately to find a solution that makes the "GNOME Software" GUI installer work correctly once again, and then a point in the direction of where I can write and update some documentation so that others can benefit input from working through this.the community before I jump to that conclusion, as well as more evidence.
