I used to have windows xp, but there was an error in the hard disk. I tried installing a different operational system, but still I can't due to that error. The only way I can access to my computer is by using Fedora 17 live mode, but checking the file list I don't have any, not even partitions!

What can I do to recover files or back up? Thanks in advance!

As I exploited Fat data recovery software to get back lost partition on my Windows system. It worked incredibly to restore all data from lost partition. Let me know which file system you are using so that I can suggest you the recovery tool.

Unfortunately, I think Andrea's hardware has failed, and recovery would be prohibitively expensive, if possible at all. Can you tell us the actual error?

Do you have another disk with enough free space for a full disk image?

If the disk is on its last legs, use ddrescue /dev/sdx /image/file/name.img /image/file/log.log (replacing the device and file names as appropriate). ddrescue will perform a linear read of the disk, which is far less stressful on the drive mechanics than trying to read files. Also, it won’t give up on errors, and tries various error recovery options that will hopefully get more data back than other methods.

Once you have an image file, you can use PhotoRec to recover actual files from it.

Both these tools are available in the Fedora repositories, so you can yum install … them while running the live CD.

Hi, this is a Fedora support platform. Does 'Kernel for Windows Data Recovery' run on Fedora? If not, can you suggest any recovery software that does?
