Fedora 25 : gdm doesn't open D.E.s other than gnome

Dear Fedora Linux Experts,

I installed Fedora 25 alongside Windows on my PC. While conversing with me @ some other thread on this forum itself a Linux EXPERT introduced me to this concept of desktop environments. I read about D.E.s and learned about Display Managers and Desktop Environments. I figured out that I had gdm as the only display manager installed on my Fedora Linux system and Gnome as the only desktop environment. I soon installed KDE(which is being shown as "plasma" by GDM), Xfce, Lxde, Mate & Cinnamon. Then I logged out of Gnome. The D.E.s other than Gnome weren't listed. Intuition suggested me to reboot. GDM started as before; only this time it had begun displaying D.E.s other than Gnome. I find written on the internet that GDM does start D.E.s like Mate and K.D.E., but I see that on my Fedora system, Gnome is the only D.E. that gdm is able to start. If I select any other D.E., gdm shows for less than approximately a second that it is about to start something and then brings me back to the point where I have to select my Name (as the Username) and then enter the password. If I select Gnome, gdm shows a similar behaviour for the initial instants but then instead of going back it displays a blank screen for a few more seconds and then starts Gnome D.E.

I don't think this is a problem with GDM, because Gnome Classic used to start when I had not installed Xfce, Lxde etc. Gnome Classic doesn't start now, after I installed K.D.E., Xfce, Lxde, Mate & Cinnamon. If I start Gnome Classic now, gdm brings me back to the login screen in the same manner: it shows for less than approximately a second that it is about to start something and then brings me back to the point where I have to select my Name (as the Username) and then enter the password.

I ran the following commands and each of them was executed in the terminal for many minutes. I saw that I installed a few GBs of packages.

sudo dnf install @kde-desktop

sudo dnf install @xfce-desktop

sudo dnf install @lxde-desktop

sudo dnf install @mate-desktop

sudo dnf install @cinnamon-desktop

I have done nothing else. Is there something that I have to do so that D.E.s other than Gnome get activated?

This is another information that may be relevant: I have installed the display managers kdm, lightdm and sddm and gdm is the only display manager that boots completely and brings me to the login screen. kdm doesn't start at all. Likewise for lightdm and sddm.

If GDM fails to see other DE's it's GDM at fault. The cinnamon package contains the session files needed for DM's to work.

$ rpm -ql cinnamon |grep session
/usr/bin/cinnamon-session-cinnamon
/usr/bin/cinnamon-session-cinnamon2d
/usr/share/cinnamon-session/sessions/cinnamon.session
/usr/share/cinnamon-session/sessions/cinnamon2d.session
/usr/share/cinnamon/applets/user@cinnamon.org/icons/guest-session-symbolic.svg
/usr/share/man/man1/gnome-session-cinnamon.1.gz
/usr/share/man/man1/gnome-session-cinnamon2d.1.gz
/usr/share/xsessions/cinnamon.desktop
/usr/share/xsessions/cinnamon2d.desktop

Thanks leigh123linux . GDM, in my system, can see other D.E.s. It fails to load them; it loads only Gnome & not even Gnome classic.

What should I do with these session files so that I can access the D.E.s other than Gnome? You told me the file names and their locations, but I've no idea what to do with them in order to access the other D.E.s

Any Fedora Linux expert, who has dealt with this issue? Kindly help me if you can see this and find some time ...

Thanks, Gunjan.

I updated my system today.

Later, I noticed some programs of mine cannot load resource images. For instance, a button icon.

So I tried Cinnamon to deal with, but... I don't even can open Cinnamon at logon (GDM?).

I have the same problem, say so.

Ps.: only "GNOME" working.

Maybe you could force gdm to use xorg to test, edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf and remove the comment

#WaylandEnable=false

to

WaylandEnable=false

reboot to test

I just removed the # and uncommented the line in custom.conf in the directory /etc/gdm . Will reboot now to see if this solved the issue. Thanks for your help leigh123linux .
