I write a small application using a tray icon. After the upgrade to Fedora 25, that icon is not shown anymore (top bar or bottom left tab); I understand this is because the support to legacy tray icons was dropped. I use Gnome DE.

So, I rebuilt it using appindicator (using libappindicator-gtk3-devel and linking with libappindicator-gtk3). With that, the indicator application starts and runs, but still no icon shown.

Can anyone give me any hints why no icon is shown or how to troubleshoot this?

Thank you!

After deeper research it looks like the observed issue is a design choice of the new Fedora default window server Wayland ( see the issue report).

Starting a Gnome session with Xorg server at login the issue cannot be observed (the legacy icons are shown even if libappindicatior is not used).
