This is a difficult question, as we don’t know your system. Maybe you could try to add to your question what type of computer you are using, which graphics hardware, driver used etc. Feel free to ask more questions here in the comments section. The result in the end should be: Your well formed and informative question, and one or more detailed answer, that help you resolve the problem (answer your question).

Please edit your question to add more information about your system hardware, about whether you can detect any patterns, whether any error messages are logged, and whether the problem occurs under a "GNOME on X11" session instead of Wayland.

Note to others having a similar problem: Please do not post "I am having this problem too" as an answer unless you have a specific fix which you believe is very likely to be exactly correct for the problem as described, or unless you are giving a set of diagnostic steps anyone with a similar problem should follow. Moderators will delete answers which are primarily simply reports of similar problems and not actually answers. If you have a different problem with similar symptoms, please ask a new question. Thank you.

I have the same problem with my Hp Laptop (Radeon Drivers) with fedora 25 cinnamon after update from fedora 24

freeze on all my video player after somes minutes. , kodi vlc mpv... No mouse but when I do CTRL+ALT+ Right [->], In the new screen, the screen works. And When I go back, the application is freezed.

Nothing in /var/log/message /var/log/Xorg.0.log /var/log/audit/audit.log xsession-error

I have to clean all .local .cache Reset my xorg.conf but nothing

I have reduce the freezing by solved a sound problem in my journalctl

cat << EOF > /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf
options snd_hda_intel model=hp-dv5 enable_msi=1
EOF

but kodi still freeze but less

I have also remove tracker fwupd spice-vdagent I think that It a bad managment of interrupts of one of my driver. But I don t know who.

This is not bluetooth. I have remove from my kernel

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="rd.lvm.lv=fedora/root rd.lvm.lv=fedora/swap rhgb quiet ipv6.disable=1 bluetooth.blacklist=yes radeon.audio=1"

I have encountered this complete linux freeze. It is not random in that the proximal action was always the same. I moved my cursor into the upper left corner (to raise the activities menu). At that point, a power off reset is the only resolution. I cannot ssh in, the web server doesn't work, ping does not answer. The display does stay on, but unresponsive. What is random is when this will occur. Uptime ranges from 2 to 7 days. There is no record in any of the logs to see what happened. It is as if the cpu hit a "halt" instruction.

Alas that I have no data or hypothesis. It has happened through the last 3 or 4 kernel upgrades. Is this hardware or software? The box passes bios diagnostics.

Thanks in advance for any clues!

Mike

I was able to solve a similar problem by changing PCI Latency Timer from 32 clocks to 64 clocks in BIOS. I am using an MSI GP60 with Fedora 25 installed. The system would freeze completely and respond only to holding the power button down. It has not frozen since this BIOS change. I tried making other BIOS changes as well, but I have reverted them.

Randomly this seems to have worked for me too! No idea why. Crashes have gone from ~ 1 every 30mins, to 0 in the last day! No other changes. This issue has been persistent since f25 but got worse since upgrading to 26. Other comments same as Mike below. Will update if issues return.

Update: issue returned, frequency massively lowered though. Still on the lookout for a fix,

Following the advice of mattdm: "I had the same issue!" :D

Problem was persistent across F25/26 (maybe 24 as well?) and as per n7wic and EL_DON uptime was random: sometimes minutes, sometimes days. Freeze usually triggered by moving to top left to access the shell overlay, but sometimes when playing video files or making a program full-screen. There don't seem to be any logs as the entire system just... stops.

I can only comment on nVidia hardware (GT640 to be specific), as that is all I have (original question has not specified further) but moving from the standard Nouveau to the proprietary nVidia ones seems to have completely solved the issue.

Only one command required:

dnf install akmod-nvidia

0 freezes since changing drivers a week ago.

This could also be what Orriginal was referring to as well, but he hasn't clarified his answer to date.

Hope this helps, I didn't want to be one of these: Relevant xkcd

I had the same problem and I seem to have cured the issue by reloading the Grahics driver ( Nvidia ) So Far, touch w ood, there have been no issues.. If I lock up again, I will post back in here but I have a feeling this was the issue...for me at least

What do you mean by "reloading graphics driver"? Can you explain the steps you took to do this?
