Debian users have had, for some time, a tool called "MAT" (Metadata Anonymization Tool). This is a cli tool that strips files of their metedata for the purpose of anonymizing the source of the file. Such a tool can, for instance, be used to remove the metadata from evidence photos and video, where the source might be a witness in a trial and subject to retaliation if their identity were to be discovered. It can also be used to protect the identity of a variety of types of whistleblowers. I'm sure there are also many other legitimate uses. As of yet, I have not found a version of this available for users of distributions with rpm based package management systems; nor have I found any similar tools for those users. Is there anything similar for us?

There's a homepage for the MAT here:

Interestingly it says that the MAT project is on hold and that the software shouldn't be used.

He does mention a number of possible alternatives, each of which seems to target a specific file format / use case.

You can also usually edit metadata in image editors / viewers so check that out in your default image viewer.

Exiftool looked pretty interesting, so I donwloaded and installed it. I then read the metadata from one of my .jpgs. This thing is pretty powerful.

Hi Graceful, I'm glad you like the look of it. If the answer is useful would you mind accepting it?

to do that you have to click on the 'tick mark' [] button.

This is helpful because it shows people searching in the future that your question has been successfully answered.
