GUI does not work in fedora 25 worksation

asked 2016-12-15 13:46:52 -0600

My issue: I installed fedora 25 a few days ago alongside windows7. I had no problems with fedora i did an update, installed nvidia drivers and all the apps i need made the necessary configurations and everything was okey. Today (2-3 days after the installation) when i rebooted from my windows7, went into GRUB menu, selected fedora25, typed my HDD encryption password, and instead of showing up the GUI login screen I get a blank(black) screen (while my monitor is running not sleeping). When i press Ctrl+alt+F2 I can open log in as a root/user but still no GUI, I can only terminal commands. Here are some of the commands i have tried and did not work(not in this particular order) "startx", "systemctl set-default graphical-target", "dnf install gdk". Am using fedora for the first time and basically have been using only ubuntu for a couple of months on my laptop so am quite the newbie. Wil be thankful is someone can solve my unsolveable issue!

Hardware i am using: CPU - AMD Athlon(tm) X4 860K Quad Core Processor 3.70 GHz RAM - 8GB Graphics Card - Nvidia GeForxe GTX 960 Windows is installed on my SSD (250 GB) Fedora isinstalled on my HDD (1TB)

Thanks in advance!

I was given a lot of replies on this matter and I have been trying them for 2 days now and nothing worked I ended up doing a full reinstallation for 30 minutes. I saved time atleast..

I had a painful trial and error with similar in F24 upgrade. Rather I've failed installing the OEM driver for Nvidia. You could be missing or corrupted desktop manager.

$> dnf reinstall gdm

I assume you're using gnome default. Otherwise, replace gdm with kdm if you're using Plasma. I've preferred to do reinstall and watch the output if GDM had not been installed. If not, just dnf install gdm.

Thanks for the fast response. I did reinstall gdm and it did install properly and after i rebooted still nothing. I also ran "dnf install vim" and did not work also. Am still looking for solution.
