If you are talking about cycling between two tabs of a terminal using Alt+Tab, then sorry that doesn't work from Gnome 3 onwards.

If you want to retain back Alt+Tab original behavior just go to the below link

https://extensions.gnome.org/

and install the extension AlternateTab

Regarding learning the working of Alt+Tab in Gnome3 visit http://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/CheatSheet#Onthedesktop

Gnome 3 by default groups tasks (such terminals) in one icon as you noted when pressing alt+tab combination.

A nice way to switch between them is to use the alt+tab combination first, then when the terminal icon is highlighted in foreground just use the key above the tab (but keep pushing alt key of course).

In my keyboard (US) the key above the tab is ` and ~ (backtick and tilde) but if you have a different keyboard layout it might be different. Just try it.
