Is DNF Tracer a reliable utility to ascertain if you should logout/reboot your system?

asked 2016-11-16 13:28:12 -0500

More than often I notice that when I update my system Tracer recommends me to logout or reboot my system. Considering there's always something unsaved and time it takes to relaunch all apps makes it hard to consider logout/reboot a good option for daily or weekly or biweekly basis. I would only like to logout/reboot when it is absolutely needed.

Daily would be an exaggeration but my observation is that in my KDE box on weekly updates Tracer recommends me to logout/reboot around 80-90% of time.

How reliable is Tracer?

In my experience you almost never have to reboot right away. Of course, updating is useless if the system & apps are not benefitting from the update, which is basically what Tracer tells you.

In any case, if you are really worried about reboots, the safest way is to only update when you are sure to reboot soon anyway.
