How do I add root as a user?

You should not login to graphic console as root, if your user has admin rights you can use sudo -s
or su -
to become root on a terminal.
If you need to login as root you can also do ctrl+alt+f3 and login as root on the terminal with no graphic interface.
At graphical login, beneath the users listed is "Not listed?". Click on it, enter "root", then root's password. By the way, after grub and as you wait for the login screen, hit ESC and catchup on your reading.
