Why do I get these message while using yum?

Hi,

Whenever I update/install a new package using Yum. I get following messages and some files are updated or fetched :

Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit
Repository google-chrome is listed more than once in the configuration
adobe-linux-i386                                         |  951 B     00:00

What is the use of all these? IMO unnecessarily my bandwidth is being used? Please let me know if I should override these messages/updates using some command/settings? Please let me know the same.

This data is called Metadata. Metadata is data about data, in this case, data about all the packages that these repositories have. This metadata is necessary, it is how yum works. So, no, you cannot "override" them. You can increase the timeout for this metadata though, but this adds the risk of missing timely updates. To increase the timeout, see the manual for yum.conf

man yum.conf

Look for "metadata_expire"

Like I said, metadata. The message is because you've installed the chrome repository multiple times. Because they are not in fedora repositories, they have their own. What's the issue?

For people using dnf. I got the same message. the google repo was listed once under yum and one more time inside the dnf confic file

Hey buddy. Google is weird and does not use a normal .repo file located in /etc/yum.repos.d I understand your frustration I am currently looking into the google-chrome repo files, and I don't know what this dude is talking about with adobe, but if you want to start over and reinstall google-chrome, and you don't mind losing your settings, you can open a terminal and type

su -

enter your root password and then type

rm -rf *google*

This will delete anything on your computer with "google" in its name so be careful. Then you can just go to google-chrome website and install it again. This should take care of your problem. Let me know if it doesn't/

Please do not use rm -rf as root. You have no idea what it removes. There is a good chance to break your system. The only way yum can detect/use repos is using repo files in /etc/yum.repos.d. There is no other way. You probably have two google-chrome repo files in the directory.

NEVER do rm -rf (translates to "remove recursively and force") - a little like hunting pigeons with a cannon - yes its successful but complete overkill.
